There are people who have arrived. In their life, their being, their place. They radiate a special inner peace and strength and imperturbability. Hubert Rogger, landlord of the Pian di Cengia hut and original Sesto ski instructor is just such a man. For him there is no better place to be than the refuge hut at the heart of the Sesto Dolomites that he has run with his family since 1979. And no better job than that of hut landlord. Here at 2,528 m, where a simple summer storm can sometimes smell like the end of the world. In the summer months, the Pian di Cengia hut is the home and workplace of Hubert and Greti, and their daughter Steffi and son Daniel, who, as a mountain guide at the Sesto – Tre Cime Alpine School guides his charges through the mountains. Everyone has his set tasks here: Hubert is the caretaker, repairman, barman. Steffi runs the service and Greti doughtily brandishes the wooden spoon and treats climbers to traditional delicacies. The logistics of deliveries along the narrow mountain track that leads from the Lavaredo hut to the Pian di Cengia hut are especially exciting. A job for chamois. And for Hubert. In the past, every day during the season he would carry around 40 kg of goods in his rucksack to the hut in the UNESCO world heritage site of the Dolomites. Later he used a motorbike, and today he travels with a small tractor. Here too we can see how times are changing. More hikers, a larger menu, higher expectations and demands. But the Sesto native does not allow this to fluster him. He, and the other Sesto refuge hut landlords, Alex Happacher from the Comici hut and Hugo Reider from the Locatelli hut have already experienced too much, here at the heart of the fascinatingly beautiful yet sometimes challenging crags of the Sesto Dolomites.
